"README.md": "# Prompt injection boundaries: a deterministic lab\n\nThis example follows a synthetic tool proposal through data access, transmission,\nand independent receiver receipts. It tests the system boundary after a hostile\nproposal exists. It does not run a model or measure prompt-injection success rates.\n\nThe legitimate task sends the exact public report to the team. The permissive\nbaseline can read a synthetic identity and send it to either of two local services.\nThe strict tool resolves the public report path, POST operation, and team recipient\nfrom trusted code. A proposal contains only three identifiers. It cannot supply a\nURL, account path, header, or payload. Unknown fields, operations, reports, and\ndestinations are rejected before reading data or attempting transmission.\n\n## Prerequisites and files\n\nRun from this directory with Python 3.9+ on the host, an active Linux-container\nDocker engine, and Docker Compose v2+. The host Python uses only its standard\nlibrary to orchestrate Docker. There are no package installations or image builds.\n\nThe Compose file pins the Python OCI image digest used for the recorded run and\nsets `pull_policy: never`. Check the image metadata before downloading an absent\nimage:\n\n```sh\ndocker buildx imagetools inspect python@sha256:e32be0e55814a08977501ca863271d9bd02443710db8f2afaf8372e2c4508530\ndocker image inspect python@sha256:e32be0e55814a08977501ca863271d9bd02443710db8f2afaf8372e2c4508530\n```\n\nIf absent, pull that exact digest before running. The test itself makes no registry\nor internet requests. The recorded run used Linux arm64 and Python 3.13.17; other\nplatforms need their own execution evidence.\n\n```sh\ndocker pull python@sha256:e32be0e55814a08977501ca863271d9bd02443710db8f2afaf8372e2c4508530\n```\n\nThe supplied files are complete, not generated placeholders:\n\n| File | Responsibility |\n| --- | --- |\n| `compose.yaml` | Internal networks, explicit mounts, non-root read-only containers and resource limits |\n| `runtime/proposer.py` | Extract the JSON proposal from the untrusted document or fixed request fixture |\n| `runtime/executor.py` | Permissive synthetic transfers and the independent strict authorization contract |\n| `runtime/receiver.py` | In-memory local receipts indexed by run and case |\n| `runtime/inspect_receipts.py` | Read receiver health and receipts independently of the executor ACK |\n| `fixtures/input/document.txt` | Illustrative hostile document with an already-produced JSON proposal |\n| `fixtures/input/requests.json` | Legitimate, context, same-host, and contract-rejection inputs |\n| `fixtures/input/context.json` | Synthetic identity representing data already available in context |\n| `fixtures/input/instructions.txt` | Instruction that leaves the deterministic proposal unchanged |\n| `fixtures/public/report.txt` | Authorized report, including its final newline |\n| `fixtures/private/identity.txt` | Synthetic identity and canary, mounted only for selected services |\n| `case-spec.json` | Frozen expected results, read only by the host verifier |\n| `run_lab.py` | Isolate cases, inspect actual runtime constraints, and compare exact receipts |\n\nThe private fixture is never included in the code mount. A read-only mount still\nallows reading; C3 removes the private mount entirely. C4 uses the fixed context\nfixture and therefore remains possible without that private file.\n\n## Run and inspect\n\nChoose a new output directory outside this example directory. The command refuses\nto overwrite one. It creates a random Compose project name and records hashes of\nthe case specification and source files before starting the receivers.\n\n```sh\npython3 run_lab.py --output /tmp/injection-boundaries-results\n```\n\nEach case starts with healthy receivers and an empty receipt set for its unique\nrun/case key. A separate inspector reads both receivers before and after execution.\nThe runner compares recipient, account, exact bytes and SHA-256, and verifies that\napplication denials happen before read or transmission. It also checks UID 65534,\nzero effective capabilities, `NoNewPrivs=1`, and a read-only root filesystem inside\nthe worker. Both actual Docker networks must have `Internal=true`.\n\nExpected observations:\n\n| Case | Expected observation |\n| --- | --- |\n| C0 | Public report reaches `approved/team` exactly |\n| C1 | Synthetic private file reaches `collector` |\n| C2 | Same proposal and receipt as C1, with the extra instruction present |\n| C3 | File read fails; no transmission attempt or receipt |\n| C4 | Synthetic context identity reaches `collector` despite private mount removal |\n| C5 | File read succeeds, collector connection fails, no receipt |\n| C5-legitimate | Public report still reaches team on the restricted network |\n| C6 | Private file reaches `approved/other-account` on the allowed host |\n| C7-private/context/same-host | Strict tool denies before read/transmission |\n| C7-extra-url/wrong-operation | Strict tool denies the invalid contract before I/O |\n| C7-legitimate | Strict tool sends the exact public report to team |\n| C8 | Deny-all also blocks the legitimate task, so utility fails |\n\nA passing run prints `PASS 15 checks across C0-C8`. C8 passes its expected denial\nassertion; it does not pass the useful-work criterion. The source spec is outside\nthe container mounts and is never imported by the strict tool. C2 is intentionally\nunchanged by construction and says nothing about whether an LLM follows a prompt.\n\nGenerated files include `frozen-case-spec.json`, `source-hashes.json`, runtime/image\nmetadata, resolved Compose configuration, before/after inventories, command outputs,\nand complete synthetic results. `application_denied`, `read_failed`, `network_failed`,\n`receiver_rejected`, and `delivered` remain distinct statuses. A missing receipt alone\ndoes not identify the reason for failure.\n\n## Retention and cleanup\n\nBy default, the runner removes only its random Compose project's containers and\nnetworks after capturing results. It does not build or remove images, create\nvolumes, or prune shared resources. To retain receiver state until receipts have\nbeen saved and reread in the canonical editorial record, add `--keep-resources`.\nThen run the exact scoped `command` stored in `cleanup.json` after retention is\nverified. Remove the selected output directory when it is no longer needed.\n\nEach receiver uses 0.25 CPU/128 MiB; one worker uses 0.5 CPU/256 MiB and one inspector\nuses 0.25 CPU/128 MiB, sequentially. This lab's configured peak is at most 1 CPU and\n512 MiB because worker and inspector do not run concurrently. These are configured\nlimits, not measured consumption.\n\n## Scope\n\nThe two local HTTP receivers model distinct destinations; `other-account` is a\ndemonstrative application constraint, not production IAM. Network membership limits\nwhich receiver is reachable, while the strict tool limits report, operation, and\nrecipient. The permissive receiver deliberately accepts both accounts.\n\nThe strict component is trusted, mounted read-only, and exposes a fixed tool\ncontract. A model with a separate arbitrary shell or another egress tool could\nbypass a check applied only here; every available path needs its own boundary.\nThere is no model, paid API, GPU, real identity, real secret, external recipient,\npublished port, host network, or Docker socket mount. Docker network configuration\nand local receipts support only this bounded setup. They do not prove resistance to\ncontainer escapes, covert channels, DNS exfiltration, redirects, browser rendering,\nor arbitrary tools.\n",
